Augustus Gauger was born in Germany. He came to the U.S. with his family in 1862, and lived on a farm near Oshkosh, Wisconsin. After working as a carpenter in Oshkosh for several years, Gauger went to Chicago and worked as an apprentice architectural draftsman. In 1875, Gauger moved to St. Paul, where he worked as a draftsman in the office of Edward Bassford. In 1878, Gauger set up his own practice and remained active until the late 1920s.
